🌞 Heatwave: Pavllove’s tips to protect your dog and cat this summer

Jun 18, 2026

Every year, heatwaves pose a real danger to our four-legged companions. Unlike us, dogs and cats struggle to regulate their body temperature. A simple excess of heat can quickly turn into heatstroke, a potentially fatal veterinary emergency.

At Pavllove, animal well-being is at the heart of our concerns. Here are our essential tips for staying safe throughout the summer.

💧 1. Ensure constant hydration

Dehydration can happen very quickly during hot weather.

To help your companion:

✅ Leave several bowls of fresh water available.

✅ Change the water several times a day.

✅ Add a few ice cubes on the hottest days.

✅ Slightly moisten their dry or wet food.

✅ Use a water fountain to encourage cats who don't drink much.

🐾 2. Beware of hot asphalt

Even when the outdoor temperature seems bearable, the ground can become extremely hot.

The Pavllove test:

👉 Place your hand on the asphalt for 5 seconds.

If you cannot keep it there, your pet should not walk on it.

At just 25°C (77°F) air temperature, asphalt can exceed 50°C (122°F) and cause painful paw pad burns.

Prioritize walks:

🌅 Early in the morning

🌇 In the evening

🌳 On grass or in shaded areas

🏠 3. Keep your pet cool at home

A dog or cat can suffer from the heat even indoors.

Some simple tips:

✅ Offer a cool and ventilated area.

✅ Use a cooling mat.

✅ Place a damp towel on the floor.

✅ Slightly dampen their paws, belly, or neck.

✅ Avoid rooms exposed to the sun during the hottest hours.

🧠 4. Keep them mentally occupied

When it is very hot, it is better to limit physical activities.

To avoid boredom:

🐶 Snuffle mats

🐾 Treats hidden around the house

🦴 Toys filled with food and then placed in the freezer

🎯 Mental enrichment games

These activities help stimulate your companion without excessive physical effort.

🚨 Recognizing the signs of heatstroke

Be especially vigilant if you observe:

❌ Intense panting

❌ Unusual fatigue

❌ Excessive salivation

❌ Vomiting

❌ Loss of appetite

❌ Abnormal gait

❌ Fainting or loss of balance

In case of doubt, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Heatstroke is an absolute emergency.
