David SAURA: Grenoble-based entrepreneur, CEO of PAVLLOVE, and passionate about the development of French animal nutrition
Entrepreneurship, premium animal nutrition, international development, ecology, innovation, and a passion for music: an encounter with David SAURA, head of PAVLLOVE, a company developed in the Grenoble metropolitan area and deeply attached to the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
Through PAVLLOVE, David SAURA aims to build a French animal nutrition brand capable of combining nutritional quality, local proximity, innovation, and responsible development.
From Grenoble to Saint-Martin-d’Hères, and gradually across France and beyond its borders, the company is now continuing its growth with new product ranges for dogs and cats.
We met with David SAURA to talk about PAVLLOVE, his entrepreneurial journey, Grenoble, the Auvergne region, the brand’s new products, its international development, and also the passions that help him maintain balance in a daily life largely devoted to the company.
Who is David SAURA?
David SAURA:
First and foremost, I am someone very focused on entrepreneurship and the development of the projects I undertake.
Today, a large part of my energy is dedicated to PAVLLOVE, its growth, the improvement of our products, and building a company capable of sustainable development.
Creating a brand is not just about marketing a product. You have to think about the company's identity, its quality, the relationship with customers, partners, logistics, business development, marketing, and, of course, what you want to build over several years.
It is this global vision of entrepreneurship that I am passionate about.
David SAURA and Grenoble: why does the region hold such an important place?
David SAURA:
Grenoble and its metropolitan area mean a lot to me.
I grew up in this region, and Saint-Martin-d’Hères also holds a special place in the history of PAVLLOVE, since it is here that the project was truly structured and developed.
I am very attached to the Isère department and more broadly to the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
We have an extraordinary region: mountains, a strong gastronomic culture, farmers, businesses, producers, and an immense amount of know-how.
I find it important that a growing company can also speak for the territory it comes from.
PAVLLOVE carries this regional dimension with great pride.
Why choose Auvergne for PAVLLOVE kibble?
David SAURA:
Auvergne has a real agricultural and food culture.
For PAVLLOVE, manufacturing our kibble in Auvergne is therefore very coherent.
We want to prioritize proximity, traceability, and supply chains that avoid unnecessary distances as much as possible.
The goal is not simply to be able to write "made in France" on a product.
We want to gradually build a model in which French production, regional partners, and short supply chains play an important role.
It is also a way to support the local economy and reduce the environmental impact associated with transport as much as possible.
What sets PAVLLOVE kibble apart?
David SAURA:
We wanted to work on several elements.
There is, of course, the quality of raw materials and the proportion of animal protein, but also digestibility and the manufacturing method.
Notably, we use a steam pre-cooking process for our kibble.
Some recipes also incorporate selected plants, fibers, essential fatty acids, taurine for cats, and the vitamins and minerals necessary for a complete diet.
Our philosophy is not just to look at a number on a label.
The nutrition of a dog or cat must be considered as a whole: proteins, fats, fibers, vitamins, minerals, digestibility, palatability, portioning, and adaptation to the animal's age and lifestyle.
PAVLLOVE is developing many new products. What are the next steps?
David SAURA:
We are working extensively on expanding our range.
One of the key innovations concerns pre-cooked pasta for dogs.
It is a project we have worked on extensively, in terms of formulation as well as production, packaging, and logistics.
We are also developing a range of prepared meals for dogs with different recipes to offer another approach to animal nutrition.
For cats, we are also working on new wet food references, particularly pâtés and mousses for cats.
The goal is to gradually have a true PAVLLOVE universe covering several uses: dry food, wet food, treats, and other nutritional solutions.
Is it your ambition to make PAVLLOVE a national brand?
David SAURA:
Yes, but we are already gradually moving beyond that dimension.
Today, we have customers in various French regions, and we are also making our first deliveries to several European markets.
PAVLLOVE orders are now being sent to Germany, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Hungary, and the Netherlands, among others.
Naturally, we also deliver to mainland France and Corsica.
For a company that developed from the Grenoble area, seeing our products gradually travel across Europe is obviously very motivating.
We are proud to be able to carry a certain vision of premium French animal nutrition manufactured in Auvergne beyond our home region.
How far do you want to take PAVLLOVE?
David SAURA:
I don't want to set an artificial limit.
Today, my priority remains building solid foundations.
Growth is important, but poorly structured growth can weaken a company.
I prefer to move forward gradually: improving products, developing logistics, strengthening our presence in France, continuing to open European markets, and building a recognized brand.
International expansion is naturally an important part of our thinking.
But every step must be coherent.
The goal is not just to sell more. The real goal is to build PAVLLOVE as a sustainable French brand of nutrition and animal well-being.
David SAURA, what role does ecology play in your company vision?
David SAURA:
It is a subject I am particularly sensitive to.
A company must obviously be economically viable, but I believe it must also consider the consequences of its choices.
In our development, we therefore try to work on several axes: proximity of production, optimization of transport, reduction of distances whenever possible, and reflection on packaging.
We also want to make progress on the use of recyclable or more responsible packaging solutions when food preservation constraints allow it.
I prefer to talk about a continuous improvement process rather than claiming a company can be ecologically perfect.
The goal is simply that every important decision also asks this question:
can we do the same thing while further reducing our environmental footprint?
Is the short supply chain part of this approach?
David SAURA:
Yes.
When we can favor regional or French supplies that are consistent with our nutritional and industrial requirements, it is something we seek to promote.
Auvergne precisely possesses significant agricultural richness.
This allows us to combine several things we are attached to: quality, proximity, French know-how, and the reduction of unnecessary transport.
I think that in the coming years, the question of ingredient origin and traceability will become even more important to consumers.
And it is an evolution that I find positive.
PAVLLOVE also works with animal shelters. Why?
David SAURA:
Because it is part of the brand's logic.
You cannot develop a company around animal well-being without also caring about the animals that aren't necessarily lucky enough to have a family or the same living conditions.
We have therefore developed various actions and collaborations with associations, notably the SPA du Dauphiné, as well as other local animal protection structures.
We also make product donations.
As part of certain partnerships, we have implemented discount codes dedicated to the communities of these associations, allowing their members to benefit from advantages while ensuring that a portion of the sales is donated back to the partner associations.
For some operations, the principle is, for example, to donate €1 per bag purchased as part of the relevant partnership.
This allows for a model where everyone can contribute.
Between company development and new projects, do you still manage to unplug?
David SAURA:
It's not always simple!
I am someone who can stay very focused on a project when I am passionate about it.
When I work on PAVLLOVE, on a new recipe, a commercial strategy, or a new development, I can really be completely absorbed.
But you also need to manage to keep up activities that allow you to disconnect.
Music occupies an important place in your life, doesn't it?
David SAURA:
Yes, immensely.
I love music and especially composing.
It is probably one of the activities that best allows me to switch completely into another universe.
Entrepreneurship requires a lot of rational thinking: numbers, strategy, negotiations, organization, development.
Music works differently.
It allows for being much more instinctive, working on an emotion, a melody, an atmosphere.
For me, these are two very different worlds but ultimately quite complementary.
Creating a company and composing music often begin in the same way, moreover: with an idea that only exists in your head and which you gradually try to transform into something real.
And sports?
David SAURA:
Sport is also important to me.
When you spend a lot of time thinking about the development of a company, you need to be able to release pressure and keep up energy.
Sport allows me to take that distance.
It is also a matter of discipline.
Entrepreneurship requires consistency, and sport teaches exactly that: results rarely come immediately.
You have to keep going, improve, and accept that certain stages take time.
How would you define your daily life as an entrepreneur today?
David SAURA:
Very intense.
I am extremely focused on the growth and development of PAVLLOVE.
There is constantly something to improve: a new range, a supplier, a product, a marketing strategy, a partnership, a market to develop, or simply a customer experience to make better.
But that is precisely what I like.
Entrepreneurship forces you to learn constantly.
What is your goal with PAVLLOVE?
David SAURA:
To build a brand that truly has an identity.
I want someone who discovers PAVLLOVE to quickly understand what we stand for:
premium animal nutrition, French manufacturing strongly linked to the Auvergne, a pursuit of quality, attention paid to the environment, and a genuine closeness with animals and their owners.
And I obviously wish to grow this vision.
First from Grenoble and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
Then everywhere in France.
And gradually internationally.
David SAURA and PAVLLOVE: a Grenoble company turned toward the future
The story of David SAURA and PAVLLOVE is thus intimately linked to Grenoble, Saint-Martin-d’Hères, Isère, and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
Through the development of its premium kibble, its future pre-cooked pasta for dogs, its prepared meals, wet food for cats, and new ranges devoted to animal well-being, PAVLLOVE intends to continue its development while maintaining its French identity.
For David SAURA, the goal remains clear: to grow the company without losing the values that accompanied its creation and development.
Innovation, animal nutrition, territory, environment, proximity, and animal well-being now constitute the main axes around which the future of PAVLLOVE is built.
